Holy Cross Sends their Prayers to Paris

12/02/2015 - Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School grade two teacher has a personal connection to Paris. On of her friends -Glenn Gervot, lives just minutes away from where the recent Paris shootings took place. Wanting to do something, Fay led the entire Holy Cross staff and students to create a piece of art that she would send to her friend in France. The school took up the challenge and sent the finished product off to Paris as well as a flag with messages of peace to be shared with the people of France and all the visitors from around the world. Read more...


Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...

10/15/2015 - Sudbury Catholic District School Board elementary students were invited to cheer on their local Laurentian University Voyageurs hockey team during one of their season games. Students from St. Francis, Holy Cross, St. David, Holy Trinity, and St. Benedict packed the arena as they cheered on the Voyageurs as they won a victory over Nipissing 3-2 in a shootout.  Read more...

Garden of Life Celebration at Holy Cross

05/11/2015 - A Garden of Life celebration that was held on Friday during education week at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School. The Full Day Kindergarten students, teachers, educators and parents helped plant flowers and vegetables for the future FDK garden. Father Jim led the group in prayer and offered a statue of Mary to look over the garden in the years to come. Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

First-time Author Visits St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School

05/08/2014 - On Monday April 28, St. Benedict students from Grade 7 and 8 as well the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) class were treated to a visit from Joanne Levy, the author of Small medium at large. This book is the author’s first published novel, and it was one of the titles included in this year’s list for the Red Maple Reading Program that was run at St. Benedict. Prior to her visit, several of the classes were able to read the novel in class in preparation for her visit. Read more...


Young Poets Read at Chapters

05/07/2014 - On Tuesday, May 6th, the Grades 3 to 6 French Immersion classes from Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School brought their poetic flair out into the community. Gathering along with friends and family at Chapters, the young poets took to the microphone and read excerpts from their poetry anthologies. They also spent time in small groups, sharing their poems and talking about their writing, and explored the many wonderful books available to read in the store. Holy Cross Students Connecting with Ryan Hreljac

12/02/2013 - On Tuesday, November 19th, the students in teacher Shanna Whalen’s Grade 2/3 class, Eva Scola’s class at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, engaged in a Skype session with Ryan Hreljac, the founder of Ryan’s Well. The students are part of the School Challenge that is organized by the foundation. Their goal is to raise money to help build a well, as well as latrines, for Haiti. Read more...


A 'Different" Movember at Holy Cross

11/28/2013 - During the month of November, several of Holy Cross teacher Tania Fay’s grade 2 students asked why they were seeing so many men with moustaches, and what the term Movember meant. Fay thought this would be a great learning opportunity for her students to discuss the importance of community initiatives. As the school often has different fundraisers throughout the year, several for cancer organizations, the class talked about how important it is to makes those in their own community happy by always trying to be supportive however they can. Peace Rainbow at Holy Cross

11/25/2013 - Holy Cross students created a Peace Rainbow during Bullying Prevention Week. At Holy Cross School, we focused on the positive and proactive strategies that students can use to prevent and to resolve conflict. For the Peasce Rainbow, students were asked to use their five senses to describe what Peace means to them. Then, each student was asked to indicate, either by drawing or writing, what Peace feels like to them on a coloured dove. Each dove corresponds to a colour of the rainbow and to one of our senses. The Peace Rainbow is displayed in our main foyer so that parents and visitors can easily see what peace means to students at Holy Cross School. Read more...


Castle Builders at Holy Cross

11/20/2013 - The children in teacher Mirella Fleury Early Childhood Educator Deborah Huneault's FDK French Immersion class had a blast building a castle using 3D shapes recently. Remembrance Day at Holy Cross

11/12/2013 - The students from Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School teachers Mme Thiessen's FDK French Immersion class and Mme Toivonen's grade 4/5 French Immersion collaborated to present a Remembrance Day celebration on November 11 Mme Fleury and Ms Beaton's FDK classes presented a tribute of Remembrance as well. Each class in the school also prepared a wreath or cross of remembrance that will be displayed at the entrance of the school for the rest of the month. Students honoured all of our Canadian soldiers who fought for freedom with a moment of silence and a moving video tribute. The gathering was a wonderful way to give thanks to our troops and their families. Read more...


Postcards for Peace

11/11/2013 - The Grade 2 students at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School sent their Postcards for Peace to veterans to thank them for having served in the past wars. The students recognized that many of Canada's service men and women continue today, to leave their families and friends, in order to bring peace to many countries around the world. The children discussed how they are all peacekeepers here in Canada. They learned that they can all help with "peacekeeping missions" by respecting and helping each other in the school playgrounds, at home, and in their neighbourhoods. One of the biggest lessons learned is that It's so important to learn from the past. Read more...

Paper Airplanes and Space

10/29/2013 - On Friday, Oct. 18th, students at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School joined Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield in kicking off National Science and Technology Week by participating in a Canada-wide Science lesson. The Gr. 2 students folded 3 sets of airplanes and adapted the wings for each model in order to simulate gravity and atmosphere on Earth, the Moon and Mars. Each student then had an opportunity to test all three paper airplanes and compared the flight distance for each model. This was a day when making paper airplanes in class definitely did not break the class rules!  Read more...


Praying for Animals at Holy Cross

10/03/2013 - On Wednesday, October 2nd, the Holy Cross School community gathered to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi in a liturgy with Father Jim Hutton. Students were asked to bring along a favourite stuffed animal, as a symbol of the animals of the world. St. Francis loved animals, calling them his brothers and sisters. During the liturgy, students held their animals up for a special blessing and prayer for all of the animals of the world. Read more...


“Egg-citing” Learning Happening at Holy Cross

09/24/2013 - Grade 2/3 Holy Cross Catholic Elementary students in teacher Shanna Whalen’s class were given an “egg-citing” experiment. As the class has been discussing gravity and how it affects solids, liquids and gases, the students were given the challenge of protecting eggs from the strong force of gravity. On Wednesday, September 18th, as part of their study on Forces and Movement and Properties of Liquids and Solids, the students were given a variety of materials, as well as bringing in some from home, and their mission was to protect their eggs from breaking when dropped from a high level.  Read more...

Holy Cross Students Take Music Monday Global!

05/06/2013 - Students from Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School teacher Ginette Toivonen's grade 4/5 FI class have taken Music Monday global! The Holy Cross class has been blogging with students from Buenos Aires, Argentina over the last few months and on Monday, May 8th they sang along with them via Skype. The song "Is Somebody Singing" collaboratively written by Ed Robertson and Chris Hadfield is being shared with the world in hopes of uniting everyone through their love of music. Students in both countries feel very strongly about the importance of music education in their schools. Music Monday is an annual event that brings together thousands of students, musicians, parents and community members across the country to celebrate the gift of music in our lives, on the same day at the same time. Read more...


Holy Cross Free the Children Club “We Are Silent” Campaign

04/22/2013 - Members of the Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School Free the Children Club joined thousands of students around the world in the ‘We Are Silent” Campaign on April 18th.  Students took a “vow of silence” in order to experience what it is like for poverty stricken children to not have the right to speak out about their basic needs, including an education. Holy Cross Takes Gold at First Annual Regal Invitational Junior Co-ed Basketball Tournament

04/12/2013 - On April 5th and 6th, Marymount Academy held its first Regal's Invitational Junior Co-ed Basketball tournament. Eleven teams in total took part in this tournament and it was a round robin format with elimination matches for the finals. Bringing in Small Change to Make BIG Change

02/04/2013 - Since October, the Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School grade 3 students from teacher Eva Scola's class, and the grade 3/4 students from teacher Shanna Whalen's class have been learning about the water crisis in Ghana, Africa. The students were involved in the 2012/2013 School Challenge through the Ryan's Well Foundation, that involved raising awareness, and money, to build a well and laterines in Ghana. The students came together to engage in discussions, and to create a plan that would make others in the school aware of Ryan's Well, and the lack of clean water in Africa. Read more...

Inaugural Cubs and Bears Junior Co-ed Volleyball Tournament

12/11/2012 - On December 9th, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School held its first Junior Co-ed Volleyball Tournament. This tournament was run in collaboration with St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. Newly dubbed the "Cubs and Bears Junior Volleyball Coed Tournament", there was a total of 15 teams entered with a round robin in three pools with the top 2 teams in each pool advancing to the finals (also included the top two 3rd place teams advancing as well to the quarter finals).  Read more...


Holy Cross Students' Transit Ride to Public Library

11/29/2012 - The Gr. 2 students in the Regular English program at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School recently participated in a program arranged between the Sudbury Public Library and the Greater Sudbury Transit. A class bus pass granted them the opportunity to ride the Sudbury Transit in order to spend the morning at the South End Public Library. For many of the students, this was their first time using the public transit and it proved to be an exciting adventure. The school program consisted of a tour of the new South End Library, a demonstration of how to locate and access books on the computer, story time and a craft. By the end of the session, students were able to leave with their personal library card, a good book to read and a reason to return with their family or classmates.  Read more...


Holy Cross Celebrates Official Grand Opening

11/06/2012 - On Thursday, November 1, 2012, students, parents, staff, and community partners gathered at 2997 Algonquin Road for a joyous celebration. Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School held its official grand opening and all in attendance were thrilled with the morning’s events. Bishop Plouffe began the ceremony with an opening prayer, and several invited guests spoke to the wonderful celebration and school opening including M.P.P. Rick Bartolucci and Mayor Matichuk. The entire group was welcomed by the school principal Louise Franklin as well as Director of Education Catherine McCullough.  Read more...


Water Walk at Holy Cross

11/06/2012 - On Friday, November 2, Holy Cross teacher Shanna Whalen's Grade 3/4 class and teacher Eva Scola's Grade 3 class, set off to obtain some understanding of how difficult it is for those living in Africa. They took with them their water bottles, one huge jug, and a jerry can, to collect water from the water filling station on Countryside. Both classes have been learning about the poor water conditions in Africa, and how children there need to walk for 2 hours and 10 000 steps to get water- dirty water. Upon arriving at our destination, Ms. Scola lead the students in a water prayer, a prayer for those who do not have the wonderful, clean water that we do, and usually take for granted. On the way back to the school, the students took turns carrying the heavy containers of water. The two classes have been introduced to Ryan's Well, and have been given the task of educating the whole school about the water conditions in Africa and how we can make a difference. They want to make others realize that they can be kids and think about Africa too.  Read more...

Gathering Stone Ritual

05/21/2012 - On May 17 Father Jim Hutton and parent Brenda Cavallin travelled to three of the Sudbury Catholic District Schools that are closing in June - St. Theresa, St. Christopher and Corpus Christi. Students at each of these schools collected stones from the yard to symbolize something they wanted to bring to the new site of Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School opening in September. The stones will be placed in the yard but will represent the spirit of the school that have travelled from all three sites. With Father Him Hutton and Brenda Cavallin's visit to each of the schools, students were invited to remember love, patience and the virtues they hold true at their school while holding onto the stone. The stones were then collected and brought to St. Patrick's Parish to be stored until the students begin their new school year at Holy Cross. Read more...


Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. Under the initiative, school boards, police and community partners will share information, advice and support. Plans will be developed to minimize risk.  Read more...

05/02/2011 - During National Organ Donation Week, staff at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board showed their support by purchasing t-shirts with the logo - Life Life then Give Life. Community Inspired by Equity Advocate

03/27/2011 - On Thursday, March 24, staff from both the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Rainbow District School Board were given the opportunity to attend a workshop with Chris D’Souza on Building Inclusive Schools and Communities. Approximately 300 teachers, administrators, Education Assistants and community members attended the presentation at the Holiday Inn to listen to D’Souza’s important message about the eradication of discrimination in our communities.  Read more...

Sudbury Catholic Board Decides to Build Holy Cross Catholic School, JK to Grade 6

12/15/2009 - The Sudbury Catholic District School Board unanimously voted to make its newest high-tech green school a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 elementary school. The Board’s Trustees made the decision at the December 15, 2009 Board meeting. The trustees decided the new Holy Cross Catholic School in Sudbury’s south end would be a separate Dual Track JK to Grade 6 School, located near St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. The new school will also include an early-learning daycare facility and a 4,000 square foot gymnasium.  Read more...

Accommodation Review Process Continues to Move Forward at Sudbury Catholic Board

01/23/2009 - The Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Accommodation Review Process has been ongoing since September 2008. This process has been and continues to be an open and transparent process where information is shared with the public and their input is sought. This Accommodation Review Process is outlined in legislation and is currently taking place in the majority of boards across the province. The final outcome of the Accommodation Review Process is such that the Accommodation Review Committee will make recommendations to the Director of Education. The Director will then in turn make recommendations to the Board, with a final decision by trustees by May 2009. Read more...


Sudbury Catholic Board Places Schools Under Accommodation Review

02/22/2008 - In accordance with the its Pupil/School Accommodation Review Regulation BR 10, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is in the process of conducting an Accommodation Review for its South/Central and North/West family of schools. Schools were selected for review purposes based on their potential for growth over the coming years (given the present trend) and the possibility that they may qualify for funding to build new schools under the Ministry of Education’s Prohibitive to Repair grants.
