Exploring Electric Circuits in Science Class ⚡️

Today, Mme Mehes’s Grade 6 French Immersion students had the opportunity to build electrical circuits as part of our science unit! 🔋💡 They experimented with series and parallel circuits, using lightbulbs, batteries, and motors. It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience as they discovered how electricity flows through different circuit designs!

This experiment not only strengthened their understanding of scientific concepts but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving skills as they worked through the challenges of circuit-building. A big thank you to Mme Mehes for making science come alive for her students!

Holy Cross Students Enjoy A Day of Discovery at Lake Laurentien 🧭

Students from Ms. Jewell, Mrs. Abbott, and Ms. Vanessa’s classes recently had the opportunity to engage in an enriching outdoor experience at Lake Laurentien. Guided by the expertise of Ms. Addie and Ms. Maddie, the students embarked on a hike through the scenic trails, where they had the chance to observe and feed the local chickadees, as well as examine animal tracks in the snow.

Throughout the hike, students participated in an informative discussion on the behaviors of animals, focusing on topics such as migration, hibernation, and adaptation. The group also had the unique opportunity to visit the chalet, where they were introduced to two of the guides’ pets—a snake and a turtle—providing a hands-on learning experience that captivated the students’ curiosity.

Following a lunch break, the students explored creative “loose parts” activities, engaging in imaginative outdoor play and collaborating on various building projects. This activity fostered teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills in a dynamic, nature-filled environment.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Ms. Addie, Ms. Maddie, and our dedicated parent volunteers, whose support made this memorable and educational day possible. Their efforts are greatly appreciated, and we look forward to more opportunities for experiential learning in the future.

Celebrating 100 Days of Learning at Holy Cross 🎉

Our Grade 1/2 French Immersion students had an exciting and memorable day as they celebrated the 100th day of school! The classroom was buzzing with energy as students took part in a variety of activities to mark this special milestone in their learning journey.

Throughout the day, students engaged in fun and educational exercises that focused on the number 100. They participated in 100 exercises to keep their minds and bodies active, explored the significance of the number 100, and got creative with journal writing, imagining what they would do with $100!

To top off the celebration, students used their imagination and problem-solving skills to create incredible masterpieces with 100 loose parts. From building castles to designing jets, restaurants, and even a Taylor Swift concert stage, the creativity on display was truly inspiring.

Bravo to our Grade 1/2 FI students for their enthusiasm and creativity – here’s to many more days of learning and growing!

Grade 2 Students Take Science to New Heights with “Egg Drop” Challenge! 🍳

Mme Riutta’s Grade 2 students had an egg-cellent time recently as they hosted Let’s Talk Science for a fun and educational “egg drop” competition. The day kicked off with an exciting discussion about gravity and momentum, where students learned how these forces affect objects during a fall.

Armed with their newfound knowledge, the young scientists got to work designing and building prototypes to protect their eggs from a high drop. With creativity and teamwork, they put their engineering skills to the test!

And the results? A smashing success! Many students’ eggs survived the fall, proving that hard work and scientific thinking really pay off.

Way to go, Grade 2 scientists! 👏🏻 Keep up the great work and continue exploring the world of science!

Family Literacy Day Fun at Holy Cross! 📚

Ms. Jewell, Mrs. Abbott, and Ms. Vanessa’s class had a fantastic time welcoming families into the classroom for Family Literacy Day! Parents and guardians joined their children in hands-on literacy games, practicing word recognition, letter sounds, and storytelling skills together.

One of the highlights of the event was a read-aloud of Sneezy the Snowman. As students and their families listened to the story, they discussed predictions, retold key events, and shared their favorite parts—all while enjoying a warm cup of hot chocolate. The event wrapped up with interactive literacy stations, where families played sight word bingo, matched rhyming words, and built sentences using word cards.

It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading and learning as a community. Thank you to all the families who joined us—we loved sharing this experience with you.

Together in Service: St. Benedict, Holy Cross, and St. David Schools Raise Over $28,000 for the Sudbury Food Bank ❤️

In partnership with the Sudbury Food Bank, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is proud to celebrate the success of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School’s second annual Food Drive. This year, the school community, with help from Holy Cross and St. David Elementary Schools raised $28,056.70 and collected 2,100 cans to support individuals and families in need across the Sudbury region. This marks an increase of $6,552.83 from last year’s total of $21,503.95, highlighting the school’s continued dedication to giving back to the community.

The Food Drive, a cornerstone of St. Benedict’s holiday initiatives, reflects the school’s strong commitment to social justice. The Christmas season provides an opportunity to support local food banks, particularly during a time when the need is greater than ever. According to Food Banks Canada, March 2024 saw over 2 million visits to food banks nationwide, a record high underscoring the urgency of addressing food insecurity.

The Food Drive campaign ran from November 25 to December 11, featuring several impactful initiatives that brought the community together:

  • St. Benedict students prepared and served pasta dinners for families, students, and community members at St. Benedict and Holy Cross.
  • St. Benedict students collected donations at Chris’ Your Independent Grocer and Messier’s Your Independent Grocer.
  • St. Benedict’s fundraising team organized a class competition to raise funds, fostering teamwork and school spirit.
  • Representative St. Benedict Bears also attended both Holy Cross and St. David Elementary schools for a pep rally, that energized their school partners to join forces in collecting monetary donations and non-perishable food items.

“This initiative has given our students a chance to reflect on their blessings, connect with their community, and develop leadership skills through community service,” said Principal Beverley Belanger. “We are deeply grateful to all our contributors; this includes our students, staff, families, elementary schools, and, of course, our local partners, including Messier’s Your Independent Grocer, Chris’ Your Independent Grocer, Caruso Club, and Vito Brand Meats, whose support made this achievement possible.”

“I’m truly inspired by the way our school community came together to support those in need this year,” said David Akero, St. Benedict student and Sudbury Catholic District School Board Student Trustee. “The Food Drive showed us the importance of food banks and the meaningful accomplishments we can achieve by coming together as a community.”
